Air Source Heat Pump Installation

What is an air sourced heat pump?

An air source heat pump is an alternative way to warm your home. It will allow you to generate your own clean renewable energy and potentially save money on energy bills. They deliver heat at a lower temperature than gas and oil boilers.

If you want to save money on your energy bill, you'll need to run your heat pump for much longer periods to get your house warm enough. You'll be able to save money by replacing an old inefficient system such as electric storage heater, oil, LPG, or coal with a new efficient system such as gas.

However, remember that a well-insulated house is essential – otherwise the energy the pump is producing will escape more easily.

How does an air source heat pump work?

An air source heat pumps take heat from the air and boost it to a higher temperature by compressing it. Then, it transfers the heat from the heater to the heating system in the house. They work a bit the way refrigerators work in reverse.

Air source heat pumps use the exact same technology as refrigerators except instead of cooling off inside the refrigerator, this technology heats up the house. A liquid refrigerant is pumped around the loop between two heat exchanger units.

As the refrigerant gets warmer, it changes into a gas. The gas is then compressed back to a liquid. The liquid refrigerant goes through another unit, which transfers the warmth of the liquid to a separate body of warm water.

At the end of the process, the liquid refrigerant returns to the original state of being a liquid again.Heat pumps typically have a COP of around 3-4. This means that for every unit of electrical power used, we will get about 3-4 units of heating output. The actual ratio of 'electricity in' to 'heat out' will vary throughout the year.

  • An air source heat pump uses the outside air to absorb heat into a liquid refrigerant.

  • Using electricity, the compressor compresses the liquid to heat it up. It then turns into a liquid to release the heat it has stored.

  • Heat is then distributed to your radiators or underfloor heating. The remainder can be stored in your hot water cylinder.

  • You can use your stored hot water for showers, baths and taps.

What are the benefits of an air source heat pump?

  • Could lower your fuel bills
  • Will cut your carbon emissions
  • Can heat your home and hot water

Air source heat pumps are a great way to save money and help protect our environment. They are also more efficient than traditional systems. Air Source Heat Pumps are a form of low-carbon heating. They use the outside air to warm or cool your home.

You can switch from a coal- or electric-powered heating system to an air source heat pump. This means you'll be using less energy than before, and also reducing your carbon emissions.

Is an air source heat pump right for my home?

An air source heat pump is suitable for many different types of homes. But there are a few things you need to think about prior to installing one to ensure it is right for you.

Have you got somewhere to put it?

You need room outside of your home to fit the pump to a wall or on the ground. It does need space around it to allow for airflow.

The two types of air source heat pumps are MONOBLOC and Split Systems.

A Monobloc has pipes which transport water to your central heating system, and a hot water cylinder inside the house. There are cheaper and faster to install, they don't take up as much room, but are less efficient than a split system.

A Split System separates the indoor and outdoor components. With this system, the heat transfer is done inside the home where it is generally warmer, which makes it more energy efficient and suffers from less heat loss as a result.

Ask our experts at Danum Plumbing & Heating for advice on which system is best for you.

What is the cost of installing an air source heat pump?

There are many factors which can affect the cost of installing a pump in your home. The size of the heat pump needed, the size of your property, if it it a new build or older property, and if you need to change the way heat is distributed around your property.

The government is providing grants to encourage property owners to install low carbon heating systems such as heat pumps, through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). These grants can help property owners overcome the upfront cost of low carbon heating technologies.

The scheme is open to domestic and small non-domestic properties in England and Wales. It runs from 2022 to 2025.

Don't worry, you will not have to replace your old gas or oil boiler just yet! The gas and oil banner ban in 2025 only applies to new build properties. There are no plans to phase out gas boilers in existing homes.

But, the government may encourage more of us to get rid of gas in favour of alternatives. Using grants or incentives for insulating our homes or installing low-carbon heating.
